They have practice downstairs. Fun fact: Their practice court is a private section of the Lifetime Fitness Center below. Sometimes, they'll keep the drapes open and people working out can watch them practice.

One of the announcers at the end reported the crowd of more than 14,000 made this the biggest running event in Minnesota. Ever? Of this year? Including TCM? Whatever. It was super crowded.

Day 294/365 - A blast from the past!

Day 294/365 - A blast from the past!

Tonight I went back in time. no, not to 26bc with a video camera like I would like (I know there was shit that went down that didn't get recorded accurately)! No, I went back to the 80's. An 80's prom to be exact. Lifetime Fitness in Boca Raton, FL hired me for a few hours to set up an elaborate system where I took prom photos, processed them and printed them all the the same night. Now, I'm no stranger to doing it all in one day. But doing it all in 3 hours is a stretch for me. I literally was like a chicken with my head cut off for the first 25 minutes. This is my first time doing something this elaborate. I had planned a system and a work flow and I'll admit there were flaws. It worked for the most part but the printer I dug out of my garage although good quality, prints slower than constipated, geriatric dog trying to crap! I was on the front lines, taking fire! "when will my picture be printed?" "has mine been printed yet?" "how can we expedite the process?" um… a new printer, maybe? I took just about 300 photos and printed just over 80 of them. That printer has never seen that volume and it was showing both its age and lack of a team player attitude. I thought a pep talk may have helped but it would have fallen upon def ears! The whole, "there is no i in team speech would of failed as we all know thats just not true, there could be as many as 4 i's in team" work with my brothers and there is definitely two i's! I'm only playing Shawn and Cory!

My saviors for the night came in the form of a fellow Art Institute graduate and Photography enthusiast, PJ and his Girlfriend Robyn. I can't stress enough how much they helped! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!! You really saved my ass! PJ and Robyn tag teamed the printing process and kept me from having to worry about it! You two really stepped up for me and to think, we'd only just met an hour before then!

Now printing is a whole other story… one that I will of course share..

My new computer didn't have the printing drivers on it. I just didn't have time to download and test. I figured since I had 2+ hours to setup before the shoot I would have time. Well, I would have if the fitness center's internet wouldn't of been a troll guarding a bridge! My phone could connect but my computer was locked out. We tried hard wiring it into the network in an office but it was obvious their I.T department is compiled of X FBI or some shit, a real fort knox! At one point someone offered a tethered Android connection. I was able to connect and even start the download but the connection was no more than 10kb a second and I just didn't have 14 years to wait! Finally we gave up trying to get my computer to connect and used one of the computers already hard wired into the system. This required PJ and our Fitness Center Liaison Amanda to Call the corporate office and get permission to hook the printer into the system. One hour after we initially started messing with the printer, we finally got a successful test print. I had already setup a tethered system with instant RAW tweaks to my computer so each person could see the final image choose their favorite out of 3 photos. From there I exported their favorite and had Lightroom automatically add a cheesy 80's themed border on it.

I was ready to shoot at 7:30 yet no one was jumping in. All it took was one person to jump in and from that point till the very end there was a long line. I've never been so busy that I couldn't get a drink, go to the bathroom or even console the upset joyce. She had ran a few errands right after we set up and forgot how to get back to the club. I was so busy I didn't hear my phone ring a bunch of times. I'm sorry Joyce! She did come back with a Jamba Juice so she was not 100% pissed… just a little. There something about the blended fruit and yogurt that really dulls her sharp edge down to a fraction of what it could be! This is actually the first time she's been upset with me.Don't get me wrong… I drive her crazy every day! but I can understand her frustration. A strange city all alone can be stressful and frightening.

So more about the setup… The backdrop was made by Amanda Jasper from Lifetime Fitness. When she asked if I had any suggestions I said… "CHEESY" she heard me loud and clear with streamers, stars and balloons! it worked perfect! Being a graphic designer she quickly created a simple 80's themed border for the photos. I was relieved when I received a PSD file with transparency. I was afraid I was going to get a flattened, compressed JPEG stolen from the internet like i've unfortunately become very accustomed to receiving from some pretty large companies!

The backdrop was just wide enough for full body vertical shots. I had told Amanda that it needed to be at least 7 feet tall. I was hoping that they didn't have any giants showing up. If this was a miami club of the same caliber I would have most definitely requested a 11 foot backdrop with the likely hood of the miami heat players showing up. The only issue I ran into was large group shots. I had to have them really squeeze in. I would of been more comfortable with about 5 feet more room on either side! oh well… live and learn!

So the night went great and I got some crazy pictures. I would do it again but will need to really work on the flow. I know for sure a designated entrance and exit and more monitors for people to preview. I do know that 4 people are definitely needed! I did manage to get some of my best work to preview on a dedicated monitor in slide show format. People seemed to LOVE watching that while they were waiting.

In other news, Joyce decided that the deal was good and went back for the car. (lost? read the previous day's blog) She figured if she took out her DVD player/monitor system that it would compensate her enough to make it worth it. We are now riding top down despite the chilly night air. Joyce says that what a sweat shirt is for. I say, thats what a parka and a beany are for! Its grossly obvious that I've been in Florida for way too long!

Tomorrow is the MMA fights and a possible shoot with the band Muska Project, lets hope I can get more sleep tonight than I did last night!
